Bull Valley Roadhouse

Bull Valley Roadhouse is a destination restaurant in Port Costa, which is south of Vallejo, across the bridge spanning the Carquinez Straits, and just a bit east, up and down and around rolling hills from Crockett. Robin & I went on one of our first "dates" across the street from there. We've been meaning to check this restaurant out ever since.

It is set in a building which might have been an old saloon, though probably just an old house. Part of the original old part of Port Costa, built around 1882. Look, they brought us hot towels.

I was really craving some seafood. Here's their Halibut Ceviche, with avocado, chiles and radish. Outstanding!

Rye Old Fashioned. Best I've ever had.

Mussels with frites & aioli. Sweet delicious PEI mussels.

We sopped up the juices with some nice locally made whole grain bread.

Finally, the fish stew. Fish (more halibut I believe), shrimp, clams, and pork belly. Pork was cooked first (roasted I think), so the fat was mostly burned off. No immense amount of pork fat in the broth to overshadow the fish and vegetables.

The stew was very hearty yet refined, as was everything else here. The base of the sauce was clearly a mirepoix with tomato, nicely balanced, tastefully rendered. We had two dishes in a row with broths as a base which were clearly made from scratch, and essentially seafood versions of chicken soup. Service was top notch. Highly recommended.
