Odds & Ends: Short Reviews

Above and below: Hashtag Poki, in Berkeley on Telegraph. Crab Salad is an amazing option. Super healthy fresh food.

Beef Bulgogi at Sorabol Korean Restaurant at Westfield Mall, downtown San Francisco. So much food, I couldn't finish it. Tender beef, broccoli cooked just right with some snap, spicy kim chi, noodles & rice.

Char-broiled Tri Tip Platter at Buckhorn Grill, Westfield Mall, San Francisco.

This one was a real eye-opener. Still pretty astonished I could get something this outstanding for less than $20 in downtown San Francisco, much less in a mall of all places. I've been hearing about the Buckhorn in its various permeations, and even though I've heard nothing but raves, I can't explain why I haven't tried it yet.

So what they serve you is a nice juicy half pound of Tri Tip, Au Jus, Mashed Red Potatoes with Gravy, Cornbread and Vegetables. All absolutely on point. The Tri Tip is the best I've ever had, but everything else is perfection itself. I'm not much of a potatoes & gravy guy, but these are perfectly done, combo of chunky & smooth, and there's no way that gravy's not made from scratch. Good corn muffin, and the vegetables are all perfectly cooked.

Recently, we were in the South Bay, running errands, sight-seeing, and trying new food. We love this place in Half Moon Bay, where the folks in front of us were buying whole salmons and hundreds of dollars worth of crab and scallops. We just got four jumbo-sized shrimp, and a piece of Sturgeon that was delicious and fresh. The shrimp were so big they tasted like Lobster tail.

Above and below are selections from Bismillah, a Pakistani restaurant near the San Pablo Casino. Above is their tomato-tinged Okra (Lady Finger), below the incredibly tender Lamb Biryani.

Finally a few selections from Chang Thai, the Lao/Thai restaurant that changed hands recently. Above is the Squid Salad, tender & tangy.

Thai Sausages: spicy.

Kao Soy with wide noodle.
