Ohgane Korean BBQ in Oakland

Beef short rib & spicy squid cooking on the tabletop bbq grill at Ohgane.

I was wanting to try some place new today, and we'd been hearing great things about Ohgane. They've got a great lunch buffet, and the dinner menu looked fantastic too. The deal is they bring you salad & banchan (Korean side dishes), and you pick out what meats, vegetables and other side dishes you want. They also don't want you to waste food, so pace yourself.

Checking out menus while salivating at the great banchan we're about to start eating.

Delicious rabbit food.

From top left, counter-clockwise: raw garlic & jalapenos; braised potato; fermented sauce of some kind definitely containing miso with spicy, sour and savory flavors; pickles; marinated sprouts; chili sauce marinated daikon; kim chee; chili marinated tempeh?; chili marinated zuchini; chili marinated tofu; out of shot marinated cucumber & marinated seaweed.

Next time we go, I'll know to cut up the ribs using the pair of scissors down there. Here's the beef short rib and squid just put on the grill. Squid doesn't take long.

Whole grain rice (hint: add some of the sauces from the banchan to it) to the left, japchae noodles I put on top of salad to the right. Did I mention that everything was top notch? Ultra-modern decor, sorta reminiscent of mid-century modern, but updated with lots of greys and silver, slate floor, chrome, everything rectangular. Makes all this luscious food really stand out.

Beef ribeye waiting patiently to be cooked. Note the mushrooms and zuke slices in the background.

This squid was the best thing, which makes sense, we get such good fresh squid here, and it's one sort of seafood that's not over-fished.

Trumpet Oyster Mushrooms & Zuchini, just before added to the grill.

Beef short rib next to grilled mushroom.

Round Two: more Spicy Squid and Spicy Marinated Shrimp. Also we got the bright idea to put all the raw garlic & jalapeno on the grill.

That was plenty of food. Outstanding. The marinade kept the the meats from getting overcooked.

Rice cake with honey.
